Berkeley's Beer, Punk & Industrial Soul
Gilman District, Berkeley
Welcome to the Gilman District — Berkeley's scrappiest, most creative corner. Once a hub of light industry and warehouses, this neighborhood reinvented itself as a magnet for craft breweries, live music, and artists who like their neighborhoods a little rough around the edges. Whether you're here for a cold pint, a punk show, or just soaking up the vibe, Gilman delivers something you won't find anywhere else in the East Bay.

The Breweries & Bars
Gilman has quietly become one of the best beer destinations in the East Bay. Fieldwork Brewing Co. is the anchor — their taproom pours adventurous IPAs and sours in a no-nonsense industrial space. Around the corner, Brotzeit Lokal brings Bavarian biergarten energy to Berkeley, with German lagers, pretzels, and communal picnic tables that feel straight out of Munich. Whether you're doing a proper brewery crawl or just stopping in for one cold one after a long week, this stretch delivers every time.
The Scene & The History
Long before the breweries moved in, Gilman Street was the beating heart of the American punk underground. 924 Gilman Street — a nonprofit, all-ages music venue — launched Green Day, Rancid, and Operation Ivy, and has been doing it with no alcohol and no major-label bands since 1986. The industrial bones of this neighborhood have always attracted people who do things their own way. Today that same spirit runs through the independent shops, artist studios, and converted warehouses that line the district. It's Berkeley at its most unfiltered.
